about

Mimicry is both an implicit and explicit theme of the larger work, particularly for its centrality a formal (perhaps dialogic) principle within black music. “Self Dub” makes symbolic reference to the formal conventions of a genre, but it does so in order to rethink or reengage those conventions as a set of practices in a new context. One of dub music’s most radical formal contributions has been its total reimagination of the documentary tools of the recording studio into material sounds and instruments. Jamaican dub producers and sound engineers’ disregard for the standardized uses of studio equipment (delays, ring modules, reverb units) led them to produce the most radical and influential sonic force of the late 20th century. This track and the larger album attempt to reengage the experimental practices of dub as a means to realizing new forms and new sounds.
